Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

George J. Laurer invented the 12-digit UPC barcode in the USA in the early 1970s; a few years later, he designed the 13-digit EAN barcode for international use.

EAN 13-digit barcodes are the most common type of barcode that is used for products in India.
Barcode is a system designed to encode information such as product number, serial number, batch number etc. The representation in the barcode can be scanned electronically either through laser or camera-based system to automatically identify the product and their specification and thus a revolution in supply chain management. It enables the parties to trade to automatically detect and track the product movement throughout the supply chain. It records data in uniform & structured manner and shares these data with trading partners and consumers ensuring safety and security of the products in the supply chain across the globe.

For applying a barcode, first one needs to convert it to an image using software, then:

  • Integrate such images into packaging design and artwork
  • Use pre-printed labels
  • Print barcodes on site directly on the packaging
GLN stands for Global Location Number, which is a number used by retailers to identify a location for suppliers.

Each product is identified as a unique product as per the criteria explained above and will require separate barcode. If two items having different barcodes is combined to create a promotional pack, it is considered as a new product for barcode and thus will require a separate barcode number.

The barcode will work for any retail product except the books, magazine, periodicals and journals. If you have a book, you should apply for International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
